Grandmother’s 1950s Wedding Dress Restored in 45 Hours

A woman is celebrating the restoration of her grandmother’s wedding dress.

On Thursday, March 20, a writer named Courtlin shared that her grandmother’s 1950s wedding dress had been revived by Amy Shane, an influencer known as “The Fairy Godmother of Vintage Dresses,” according to Khak radio.

Courtlin had sent her late grandmother Darlene’s wedding dress for restoration in November. Darlene had worn the dress during her wedding to her husband Michael in 1959.

Originally purchased from Detroit’s J. L. Hudson Department Store in the early 1950s, the dress was worn not only by Darlene but also by her two sisters, Patricia and Beverly.

“My mom told me that the dress was likely a significant investment, so it made sense for the family to reuse it,” Courtlin wrote. “My grandparents were married for over 60 years before my grandma passed away in October 2022.”

Given the dress was in “VERY rough shape,” Courtlin’s family decided to donate it for restoration.

Courtlin’s mother discovered Shane’s Instagram page, where she showcases restored vintage gowns and dresses.

“In the comments on the initial unboxing video, many people asked how we could part with such a cherished family heirloom,” Courtlin shared. “The answer is simple: we believe my grandma would want it to be worn again. We don’t have the expertise to restore it ourselves, and spending money just for it to sit in a box would be pointless.”

Shane took her followers along on Instagram as she documented the restoration process.

Describing the project as her “hardest restoration to date,” Shane spent around 45 hours bringing the gown back to life.

The effort was well worth it, as Courtlin described the transformed dress as “even more beautiful than we could have imagined.”

The restored dress was brighter while still retaining its intricate floral embellishments.

“While this dress showed signs of age, it also carries so much sisterly love, and I was honored to restore it,” Shane wrote in her caption. “This gown was by far the most challenging, and it even tested my patience, but in the end, it was all worth it!”

She added, “Before anyone comments, only 3” of a small portion of the train was removed to create gussets to repair the silk side seams.”

“Hand-beaded glass beads and pearls were added to a few small areas, as excessive stain removal would have damaged the silk. A small bow was also created from the remaining fabric and added to the front,” she continued.
