The online clothing brand Snag is receiving 100 complaints each day claiming that their models are “too fat.”
In an interview with the BBC, Chief Executive Brigitte Read explained that her company’s models, who represent sizes ranging from 4 to 38, are frequently targeted with “hateful” comments about their weight.
To address this, 12 of Snag’s 100 staff members are dedicated to removing such negative comments and supporting those promoting body positivity.
Read emphasized, “Fat people exist, and they are just as valid as thin people. They buy clothes and need to see how they look on people who resemble them. Your worth is not determined by your size. Models of all sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and abilities should be represented.”
Last month, a Next ad was banned after a model was deemed “unhealthily thin.”
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received 61 complaints in 2024, mostly concerning models perceived as too thin.
On the other hand, Snag’s advertisements have sparked debate online, with some critics accusing the brand of showcasing models who are “obese.”
Catherine Thom, who spoke to the BBC, shared her frustration: “I’ve been bombarded with images of obese girls in tights after buying from Snag. I see these morbidly obese people all over social media wearing Snag tights. How is this allowed when Next’s model photo was banned? There needs to be fairness, not just politically correct body positivity. Normalizing an unhealthy weight, whether it’s obesity or being severely underweight, is harmful.”
Yet, opinions on Reddit show a different perspective. One user wrote, “If you’re advertising clothes for larger people, your models will naturally be larger. If you don’t like it, just turn the page.”
Another commenter questioned, “Who even takes the time to complain about a model’s size?”
