Gap Gains Momentum with Viral Collaboration Featuring Timothée Chalamet’s Custom Satin Set

by Demos

Gap, the American apparel brand once known for offering high-quality, affordable clothing staples, has faced significant price hikes in recent years, leaving many long-time customers wondering about the reasons behind this change.

The brand, which became a staple for middle-class families, began expanding its reach by partnering with luxury brands in an attempt to offer high-end fashion at more affordable prices while increasing revenue. This strategy led to partnerships with several luxury names, including Balenciaga in January 2022, Kanye West’s Yeezy in September 2022, and Cult Gaia in 2024, among others.

While the luxury fashion market has seen some challenges, these collaborations have proven successful for Gap, helping the company reverse a downward sales trend.

In its fiscal 2024 earnings report, Gap Inc. revealed a 1% increase in net sales compared to the previous year, with comparable sales rising 3%. Although this might seem modest, it is a remarkable turnaround considering that in 2023, Gap reported a 5% drop in net sales and a 2% decline in comparable sales.

One of Gap’s key moves in revitalizing its brand was appointing American fashion designer Zac Posen as its creative director in February 2023. Posen, renowned for designing glamorous red-carpet gowns for celebrities, brought his name and connections to Hollywood, which helped bring Gap back into the spotlight.

In the past few years, actor Timothée Chalamet has become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about stars, known for his unconventional fashion choices at high-profile events and his appearances on shows like Saturday Night Live and his performance in the Oscar-nominated film A Complete Unknown. Chalamet has often worn bold colors, eccentric patterns, and gender-fluid silhouettes from top luxury brands like Givenchy, Tom Ford, Prada, and Louis Vuitton.

However, at the 2025 Academy Awards Nominees Dinner, Chalamet caused a stir with his fashion choice—not because of the bold design, but because of where it came from. The actor wore a custom-made black satin two-piece set—a light jacket and matching pants—created by none other than Zac Posen for Gap.

What was meant to be a one-of-a-kind design for Chalamet went viral, and Gap decided to make the entire look available for purchase on its website. The satin set, which would typically command a much higher price tag at luxury brands, was priced at less than $400 for both pieces. The Satin Icon Jacket retails for $198, while the Satin ’90s Loose Pant is priced at $128.

This bold move by Gap may mark a significant shift in the brand’s marketing strategy. By partnering with celebrities who resonate with the Gen Z community—such as Tyla, Troye Sivan, and now Timothée Chalamet—Gap is looking to regain its status and appeal to younger consumers while maintaining its commitment to affordable, stylish fashion.
