A new vintage clothing shop, Glass Onion, has opened in Nottingham, offering an eclectic mix of garments catering to all budgets and seasons. The store, which opened on Friday, February 28, features a range of second-hand treasures, including high-end finds such as a Burberry sheepskin coat priced at £280—originally worth over £1,500.
Located in Bridlesmith Gate in the former premises of Relic x Hooked, the 2,000 sq ft store offers vintage items at prices ranging from £5 for accessories to a few hundred pounds for designer brands. Most items are priced between £10 and £35, including jeans, football tops, dresses, blouses, trainers, jackets, and accessories like belts, bags, and hats. Shoppers will also find cozy winter coats and stylish boho tops.
Glass Onion’s newest store is the company’s fourth, and its first outside of Yorkshire. The shop’s shelves will constantly change as items are sold and replaced. In the past, rare and unusual items have turned up in the company’s vintage warehouses, such as a jacket believed to be over 170 years old, made by indigenous tribes from western Canada in the 1850s.
Shoppers can also discover big-name vintage brands like The North Face, Nike, Levi’s, Adidas, Ralph Lauren, and Champion. For those seeking rare items, the store features a “Rare Archive” section with exclusive finds.
To mark the store’s grand opening, the public was invited to an early VIP access event, which featured freebies from local businesses Peter Pizzeria and Doughnotts, as well as a chance to win a £100 Glass Onion voucher. The opening drew a great deal of excitement, especially considering it is the first Glass Onion store to open in Nottingham. The brand originated 20 years ago in Barnsley, Yorkshire, in a coal shed belonging to founder John Hickling’s grandmother.
Spokeswoman Alice Leadbetter expressed excitement about the opening, saying, “The response has been amazing. Although we haven’t built a strong customer base in Nottingham yet, it’s been really positive. Nottingham is such a vibrant city with lots of students, creatives, and independent businesses. We thought it would be a great fit for us.”
Glass Onion also offers discounts for students, including 15% off and frequent sales and deals. The store is open seven days a week and stocks items sourced from textile recycling plants across the US and Europe. The company processes around 20,000 kg of second-hand clothing each week at its headquarters in South Yorkshire.
Glass Onion’s first store opened in Sheffield in 2019, where it quickly became a local favorite, winning several awards for Best Indie Retailer and Best Vintage Retailer in Sheffield. The brand now operates two stores in Sheffield, including one in the Meadowhall shopping center, and a third store in Leeds.
Nottingham is already home to several vintage and second-hand clothing shops, including Cow in Hockley, White Rose stores, Wild Clothing, and Garms, all of which are located in Bridlesmith Gate.
