London Fashion Week (LFW) kicked off on Thursday with a powerful showcase by designer Harris Reed, whose bold, gender-fluid silhouettes stole the spotlight. The 28-year-old British-American designer, who also serves as the creative director for Nina Ricci, debuted his “Romanticism Gone Nonbinary” collection at Tate Britain. Known for his theatrical approach to design, Reed has become a favorite of high-profile celebrities like Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, Adele, and Beyoncé.
This year’s event has been shortened by one day, and a number of notable designers are absent, including JW Anderson, who is speculated to be replacing Daniel Lee at Dior. However, other top designers like Erdem, Simone Rocha, and Richard Quinn are set to take the stage starting Friday.
In a bid to promote eco-conscious fashion, the British Fashion Council (BFC) is introducing new sustainability standards for emerging designers. The BFC has also expanded its commitment to environmental practices by banning wild animal skins and fur, following previous restrictions on exotic skins.
Despite the challenges posed by Brexit and the pandemic, BFC director Caroline Rush remains optimistic about the ongoing relevance of LFW. This season marks Rush’s final fashion week before she passes the torch to Laura Weir, who will take over as CEO.
