Street Style Comes Back to Life

“Street style is definitely alive again. It feels like fashion has its soul back,” Barton said in an email to Forbes. “This season’s street style was buzzing with real creativity [and] unexpected pairings everywhere. It’s playful, expressive, and just fun again.”

Outside the fittings, fashion shows, and after-parties, photographers work tirelessly to capture spontaneous fashion moments from models, editors, and other attendees. These candid images often inspire “model off-duty” looks and innovative fashion ideas.

Barton noted that this season’s street style showcased unexpected blends of distinct styles, such as “sporty-meets-ultra-femme” and “boho with an edge.” She pointed out that self-expression was reflected in subtle details, such as “brooches and colorful lace tights peeking out.”

Bold Colors Make a Comeback

Muted neutrals and monochromatic outfits have dominated recent seasons, but Barton observed that the reign of understated earth tones might soon share the spotlight with bolder, more eye-catching color combinations. “Color is making a major comeback and I couldn’t be more obsessed,” Barton said. “The runways were drenched in rich, saturated hues. Last year was all about monochromatic dressing, but now? It’s about mixing bold tones for perfect contrast.”

This season, high-contrast looks that mix vibrant colors are taking center stage. Barton highlighted hues with a distinctly ‘70s vibe, reminiscent of vintage earth tones. “I’m all about rich browns, buttery yellows, deep olive [green], and any shade of red,” she said. “They just feel so luxe and effortless.”

The ’70s color revival was first hinted at when former Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s debut 2024 collection at Valentino embraced a similar aesthetic, shaping the broader fashion industry.

Boho with a Modern Twist

Barton describes one emerging trend as a relaxed, bohemian vibe with “attitude.” This flowing, carefree style is being given a contemporary update with “warm brown tones, oversized frames, layered textures, and animal prints.” “Boho is back and here to stay,” she declared, noting that its influence is evident in her own styling.

To add personality to these bohemian looks, Barton recommends pairing them with bold prints like animal stripes or oversized polka dots. These prints, when paired with crisp edges and inventive tailoring, create a striking contrast.

The boho resurgence also extends to outerwear and accessories, where warm brown shades are making a strong statement. Barton pointed to the rise of statement leather trenches, brown suede handbags at Miu Miu, and corduroy, denim, and shearling offerings at Saint Laurent.

Menswear with a Twist

Fashion enthusiasts have long admired the influence of menswear, especially in oversized outerwear, suits, and separates. According to Barton, this trend continues but with a modern twist. “This season it was about menswear with a twist,” she explains. “Tailored pieces are still going strong, but in 2025, it’s all about the unexpected.”

The trend calls for mixing structured blazers with relaxed elements, such as slouchy boots, lace peeks, or layered jewelry to soften the look. Barton emphasizes that striking a balance between textures and structural silhouettes allows for creative expression. For example, pairing a boxy, oversized jacket with a feminine heeled bootie or a tailored men’s shirt with a statement leather trench creates a unique, personalized style.

Maximalism Is Making a Comeback

After years of minimalist fashion, Barton sees a return to maximalism. “More is more,” she says, noting the prevalence of “oversized bags, chunky earrings, statement hats, and layers on layers” this season. She’s thrilled to see maximalism re-enter the spotlight, encouraging everyone to embrace bold fashion choices.

The trend is about adding layers of texture to monochromatic outfits, elevating them with fun, eye-catching details. From the oversized accessories to intricate layers, maximalism invites creativity and personality into fashion.

As trends evolve cyclically, maximalism is emerging as a counter to minimalism’s reign, just as it did after the popularity of miniature handbags with sharp edges.

Barton’s takeaways from NYFW reflect a broader shift in fashion’s evolution, one where bold, playful, and expressive styles take center stage. From embracing vivid colors to revisiting past decades, the upcoming season promises a vibrant, eclectic mix of fashion choices.
