South African media mogul and fashion entrepreneur Somizi Mhlongo recently made waves as his clothing brand, Sompire Kids, made its unexpected debut at the prestigious New York Fashion Week (NYFW). What started as a simple plan to provide models with his designs for backstage wear turned into a monumental moment for Somizi, with his creations strutting down the runway and capturing the attention of the global fashion world.
Known for his work as a TV personality, choreographer, and author, Somizi has long been a standout in the entertainment industry. Yet, his creative vision extends beyond television, as he continues to make his mark in fashion with an eye for distinctive design.
Originally launched as a children’s clothing line, Sompire Kids has evolved into a versatile brand with broad appeal. Launched in 2023, the brand has already gained significant traction in South Africa and is now recognized as one of the leading local brands in the fashion industry. Its expansion into the global market took an unexpected turn at NYFW.
What was initially intended as a behind-the-scenes wardrobe donation for models soon turned into a runway showcase. Somizi shared the story on Instagram, reflecting on the surprise moment: “When @3apples_pictures_sa asked me to give them @sompire_kids merchandise for their New York trip, I thought, ‘Oh sweet, they just want to wear them during rehearsals or just casually in between shows at New York Fashion Week.’ Little did I know, they would end up showcasing my clothes on the big stage. What an honor. I’m beyond humbled and grateful for this opportunity. I’d like to thank all the models who trusted my brand on such a huge platform.”
The Sompire Kids collection that debuted at NYFW certainly did not disappoint. Featuring vibrant, youthful designs with playful prints and colorful patterns, the collection blended elegance and comfort in a way that appealed to both children and adults. A notable highlight was the inclusion of African-inspired prints, which gave the designs a unique edge, setting Sompire Kids apart from other brands at the event.
Meanwhile, in a separate but equally stylish note, Somizi’s ex-husband, Mohale Motaung, was recently spotted hitting the gym in chic pink gym wear, maintaining his fitness journey with a stylish touch. Known for his recent personal achievements, including purchasing a new home and excelling in his studies, Mohale has joined a growing list of celebrities, including Boity Thulo, Dineo Ranaka, and Connie Ferguson, who are embracing fitness in their daily routines.
