Molly-Mae Hague Reveals £500,000 Loss for Maebe After Blazer Controversy

by Demos

Molly-Mae Hague recently shared details about a costly misstep her clothing brand, Maebe, faced after a defective blazer from the inaugural collection led to significant backlash.

In her Prime Video series, Molly-Mae: Behind It All, the 25-year-old influencer offers an unfiltered look at her life, including the aftermath of her broken engagement, her experiences as a single mother, and the challenges of launching her first fashion label.

While Maebe’s debut collection initially sold out in just 24 minutes, the excitement was overshadowed when a grey oversized blazer sparked widespread criticism online.

The blazer, priced at £140, went viral for the wrong reasons as customers complained about bobbling after minimal use. Social media users criticized the quality, citing the high price point as unjustified.

Hague admitted the backlash was difficult to process.

“I’ve spent years trying to make it perfect. All I want is for people to be happy,” she said. “The negativity has been hard to handle. Not all of it is fair, but I have to admit that some of it is justified.”

She explained that the issue stemmed from an unexpected fabric change.

“The fabric the blazer was made with wasn’t the one we approved. Our final sample—the one I wore for a year to test—didn’t bobble,” she revealed.

The problem escalated when the same fabric was used for other items in future collections, including two coats. This forced Hague and her team to pull thousands of garments, resulting in an estimated £500,000 loss.

Speaking to her father, Steve Hague, she expressed her frustration.

“It’s a disaster. People are wearing the blazer twice, and the fluff is balling up. We also have two coats in the same fabric—thousands of pieces. The calculations show it’s a loss of half a million pounds,” she admitted.

In the series, viewers see Hague discussing the issue with Maebe brand director Elisha Diamond, who confirmed the fabric fault and outlined plans to rectify the situation.

Diamond explained that the factory had sent fabric for production without final approval. The unapproved fabric was different in texture and color, leading to widespread issues.

“We’ve got 550 pieces from the second drop,” Diamond said. “I’m working with the factory to take that stock back, so we won’t be charged for it. While it’s promising, this situation is still a massive disappointment and a significant sales loss, especially for one of our standout pieces.”

As the brand navigates this setback, Hague remains determined to rebuild customer trust and ensure future collections meet her quality standards.
