A historic city centre location in York will soon welcome a new tenant, as popular national retailer Oliver Bonas plans to take over the site previously occupied by Boots.
The Grade II listed building at 1 Kings Square will open its doors to a new business for the first time since Boots vacated the premises in August 2023. Oliver Bonas, a well-known lifestyle and clothing retailer, has filed plans with the City of York Council detailing proposed changes to the building.
While the exact date of the move is still to be confirmed, the brand plans to relocate later this year from its current store on Stonegate. According to the application, Oliver Bonas intends to take over the lower ground floor, ground floor, and first floor of the building. The retailer will reconfigure the space by repositioning stud walls to create a new layout, installing a new door, and updating the lighting.
The exterior of the store will feature Oliver Bonas’ signature pastel green color, and the brand has expressed its intention to retain the building’s existing stained-glass window.
Additionally, the upper floors of the Kings Square site will undergo renovations to be transformed into new city centre residential accommodation. These plans are being overseen by The Helmsley Group, which is also leading the Coney Street regeneration project.
Max Reeves, director at Helmsley Group, shared his excitement about the developments: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming Oliver Bonas to a larger store on King’s Square and are eager to begin transforming the upper floors into much-needed city centre housing. There are several disused upper floors like those at 1 King’s Square throughout the city, and we aim to repurpose these historic buildings to provide essential city centre homes.”
