A woman turned to the Reddit community for advice after a family vacation in Hawaii sparked a heated disagreement over her swimwear, specifically a bikini, with her mother-in-law.
In her now-deleted Reddit post, the 35-year-old woman explained that she had an “average body type” and had worn bikinis for most of her life. For the trip, she selected a standard bikini with good coverage, featuring a triangle bra top and cheeky bikini briefs.
The tension arose when, after a day at the beach, her mother-in-law confronted her about her choice of swimwear. According to the poster, the mother-in-law pulled her aside and criticized the bikini as “disrespectful and disgusting,” given that the family vacation included children and male relatives.
The criticism continued as the mother-in-law compared the woman’s outfit to those of other female relatives. The woman recalled her mother-in-law saying, “Out of all the other females of my age on the trip (husband’s two sisters and two sister-in-laws), how was I the only one who wore an inappropriate swimsuit while the others wore one-piece swimsuits?”
Despite the criticism, the woman refused to back down. She politely declined her mother-in-law’s suggestion to buy more modest swimsuits from a nearby Target.
Although her husband supported her decision to wear what she wanted, he suggested she buy a one-piece swimsuit “just to keep the peace.” The suggestion, however, didn’t sit well with the woman.
In an update to her post, the woman shared that she confided in her sister-in-law, who defended her bikini choice, saying, “There is nothing wrong with that bikini.” She also revealed that she chose to wear a one-piece herself due to her feelings about her postpartum body.
The woman stated she would continue wearing her bikini but would add a cover-up for modesty. If the issue persisted, she said she would have another discussion with her mother-in-law.
Many Reddit users sided with the woman, arguing that her husband should not have suggested buying a one-piece to appease his mother. One user wrote, “Tell him that you aren’t going to get a new bathing suit to make his mother happy so the vacation won’t be ruined. You didn’t pay for this trip to be insulted and disrespected by his mother.”
Another user added, “One of the problems with him wanting you to buy a one-piece to keep the peace is it sets a precedent.”
