Oliviero Toscani, the renowned fashion photographer famous for his provocative ad campaigns with Italian clothing brand Benetton, has passed away at the age of 82, as confirmed by his family.
Toscani had been battling amyloidosis, a rare and incurable disease that affects vital organs and nerves. His wife, Kirsti, shared the sad news on Instagram, saying, “It is with great sorrow that we announce the news that today, 13 January 2025, our beloved Oliviero has embarked on his next journey.”
The photographer had been hospitalized on Friday in Cecina, close to his home in Tuscany, in a serious condition. In an interview with Corriere della Sera last year, Toscani revealed he had unintentionally lost 40kg (88 pounds) due to his illness. “I don’t know how long I have left to live, but I’m not interested in living like this anyway,” he stated at the time.
Known for his daring campaigns that highlighted social issues such as the AIDS epidemic, racism, war, and the death penalty, Toscani’s work made a lasting impact on both fashion and societal conversations.
To honor his legacy, Benetton released a photo he captured for the brand in 1989. A spokesperson for the company said, “In order to explain certain things, words simply don’t suffice. You taught us that. Farewell Oliviero. Keep on dreaming.”
