Pickle, a sustainable fashion brand, recently made the decision to not accept donations from fast fashion companies like Zara and H&M as part of their clothing drive for victims of the ongoing LA fires.
With a mission to combat the negative impact of fast fashion, Pickle operates a rental app and a store in New York’s West Village. As thousands of people in LA were forced to evacuate due to the fires, the brand wanted to ensure that the donations they received were of high quality and aligned with their values.
One individual who tried to donate kids’ clothes from Zara was turned away. They were surprised to learn that items from brands like Nike were considered acceptable, prompting a deeper discussion on the ethics of fast fashion.
Pickle made it clear on social media that they were committed to providing only the best items for those in need. Despite the urgency of the situation, they remained firm in their decision, emphasizing the importance of helping fire victims rebuild their lives with quality donations.
The response from the New York community was overwhelming, with donors lining up around the block. In fact, Pickle received four times the expected amount of donations, which led the team to be even more selective in their collection.
The brand explained that they aimed to prioritize items that would make a lasting difference. After ceasing to accept fast fashion donations, they redirected donors to other organizations where those items could still be useful.
Volunteers in LA will distribute the collected clothing at a donated retail location, and Pickle expressed their gratitude for the community’s incredible support. The brand plans to refine their approach as they collaborate with other organizations to maximize their positive impact.
