Two Rivers Media has secured a commission from BBC Scotland to create a new series exploring the social history of fashion in Scotland.

Building on the success of previous documentaries such as The Years That Changed Modern Scotland and The Women Who Changed Modern Scotland, Kirsty Wark returns to BBC Scotland with a fresh two-part series titled Icons of Style.

Kirsty Wark expressed her excitement about the new project, stating, “Fashion remains one of Scotland’s most prestigious and unique exports. From its medieval origins, with strong ties to Europe—especially France—to its popularity in Georgian Britain, and the influence of today’s leading designers, Scottish fashion has made a global impact. This series will explore how fashion has shaped social, cultural, and political landscapes, and I’m thrilled to weave these stories together for BBC Scotland.”

Bianca Barker, Executive Producer at Two Rivers Media, highlighted the depth of Scotland’s fashion story: “The fashion history of Scotland is rich, multifaceted, and iconic. Kirsty brings a personal passion to this series. Her previous social history projects on the channel performed exceptionally well on iPlayer, showing how deeply these stories resonate with viewers.”

Tony Nellany, BBC Scotland Channel Manager and Commissioning Executive, added: “This series will take audiences on an engaging journey through the evolution of a creative industry that has deep roots in Scotland’s past and has developed in remarkable ways over the centuries. Kirsty is the perfect guide, leading viewers through the significant moments, trends, and personalities that have defined Scottish fashion.”

Icons of Style was commissioned by Tony Nellany for BBC Scotland and iPlayer, with Bianca Barker serving as Executive Producer for Two Rivers Media.
