Avoid Oversized Clothing: A Key Fashion Tip for Women Over 50

The right hairstyle, skincare routine, and makeup tricks can significantly help women look younger. However, even the best anti-ageing tools can’t hide a poor wardrobe. A style expert has highlighted a major fashion mistake women over 50 should avoid at all costs.

Serena Wilkerson Butler, known as “Style With Serena” on YouTube, advises middle-aged women to stop wearing clothing that is too oversized. She emphasizes that no matter your age, everyone wants to look stylish, relevant, and fresh.

According to Serena, one of the most common style mistakes she sees is women opting for clothes that are too big. She believes many women choose oversized outfits to hide areas of their bodies they’re self-conscious about, such as their tummy or hips. However, this often backfires.

“Wearing overly large clothing makes you look larger, not smaller,” says Serena. “It can make you appear sloppy, and sloppy looks frumpy.” She adds that instead of hiding behind oversized garments, women should choose more tailored, well-fitting pieces. These flatter the figure and create a more polished appearance.

Serena points out that oversized tops can be particularly problematic for women with larger busts. A baggy T-shirt, she explains, can create a “tent effect,” where the shirt hangs from the chest, making the wearer appear larger than they are.

This doesn’t mean women over 50 should wear tight, revealing clothes. Instead, Serena advises opting for items that “skim” the body—neither too tight nor too loose. Clothes should enhance the figure without drawing attention to flaws.

Her final tip is universal: “Don’t dress bigger than you are.” She says this advice applies to women of all sizes and will prevent the appearance of looking frumpy or older.

For women over 50, the key is to embrace a well-fitted wardrobe that enhances their body and style.
