Dame Margaret Barbour is set to receive a special recognition award for her contributions to the fashion industry at The Fashion Awards 2024, presented by Pandora. The event, organized by the British Fashion Council (BFC), will be held on December 2 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Fashion Awards serve as the main fundraiser for the BFC Foundation, celebrating fashion’s role in culture and entertainment, while highlighting creative talent through the themes of purpose, excellence, and innovation.
The special recognition award honors individuals who have made a lasting impact on the fashion industry and have consistently supported British excellence. Dame Margaret Barbour joined J Barbour & Sons in 1968 after the passing of her husband, John Barbour, and became chairperson in 1973. Under her leadership, Barbour grew into a globally recognized brand. In the 1980s, she designed the Bedale, Beaufort, and Border jackets, which remain popular to this day. Throughout her tenure, Dame Margaret has upheld the company’s core values of quality, durability, and functionality.
In addition to her business accomplishments, Dame Margaret has been an active philanthropist. She established The Barbour Trust in 1988, now known as the Barbour Foundation, which supports charitable causes primarily in the North East of England. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she repurposed Barbour’s factory to produce PPE for local NHS Trusts. She has also led the company in sustainability efforts, launching initiatives such as “Wax for Life” and “Barbour Re-Loved” to extend the lifespan of their products. This year, she introduced “Quilt for Life,” a service focused on repairing quilted jackets.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award from the BFC,” Dame Margaret said in a press release. “Barbour has been my life’s work, and as we celebrate 130 years, I believe my late husband John would be proud of what we have accomplished. This recognition is also a testament to the dedication of my team.”
Caroline Rush, CEO of the British Fashion Council, praised Dame Margaret for her leadership and commitment to British fashion. “We are thrilled to celebrate Dame Margaret’s extraordinary contributions in Barbour’s 130th year. She has consistently championed creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability, positioning Barbour as a cultural icon.”
The Fashion Awards 2024 will gather a global audience in London to recognize leaders in the fashion industry and support emerging talent. The event is crucial in raising funds for the BFC Foundation, which focuses on education, grants, and business mentoring to ensure the future success of British fashion.
