London Fashion Week Celebrates 40th Anniversary with a Mix of New and Established Designers

Demos

London Fashion Week (LFW) has long been a springboard for renowned designers such as Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham, and the late Alexander McQueen. Despite many of these designers now showcasing their collections at Paris Fashion Week, LFW’s 40th anniversary promises an array of exciting British and international talent.

Among the ‘big four’ fashion weeks, which include New York, Milan, and Paris, London is known for its youthful and innovative spirit. The upcoming spring/summer 2025 season, running from September 12-17, will highlight the best of British and global fashion.

Emerging Designers

The British Fashion Council’s Newgen initiative, launched in 1993, continues to support emerging designers. This season, seven new names will take the spotlight. Among them are Steve O Smith, Pauline Dujancourt, and Yaku Stapleton. Stapleton, who won L’Oréal Professionnel Creative Award for his MA collection at Central Saint Martins in 2023, will present designs featuring recycled materials and eco-friendly elements.

Other newcomers include Standing Ground, Karoline Vitto, and Johanna Parv, each set to showcase their collections on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of LFW. Brazilian designer Karoline Vitto made headlines at Milan Fashion Week last year with a curve-cast show featuring model Ashley Graham, supported by Dolce & Gabbana.

This season, the Newgen presentations are moving from The Old Selfridges Hotel back to 180 The Strand, marking a return to tradition for LFW’s milestone event.

Focus on Sustainability

This year, LFW is emphasizing sustainability more than ever. The event has reinforced its ban on fur—a stance not universally adopted by other major fashion weeks. Many designers are now integrating eco-friendly practices and setting sustainability targets, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will be noteworthy to see if these standards are fully embraced by the participating labels.

Returning Favorites

While new faces bring fresh energy, LFW remains anchored by established British names like Richard Quinn, Erdem, Burberry, and Roksanda. These designers continue to be central to the London fashion scene.

Returning and Missing Designers

Nensi Dojaka, who won the 2021 LVMH prize, is making a notable return this season. After missing the past two seasons, Dojaka will once again showcase her distinctive sheer and figure-hugging designs. Her creations have previously been worn by celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo.

British-American designer Harris Reed, known for his work with Nina Ricci and his high-profile shows featuring stars like Florence Pugh, will also be making his debut at LFW’s schedule this year.

However, some prominent designers are absent this season. Molly Goddard, famous for her voluminous tulle designs, and Dilara Findikoglu will not be participating.

Overall, London Fashion Week’s 40th anniversary will be a dynamic blend of emerging talent and celebrated designers, continuing its tradition of innovation and style.
