CENTRAL TEXAS — Fashion enthusiasts and community members are in for a treat this weekend as Central Texas College (CTC) prepares to host an open house and fashion show on Saturday.
Event Details
The open house will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the fashion show scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in building 224 of the Anderson Campus. The event will spotlight designs by students from the College for Kids Fashionista Design Course, alongside the latest collection from fashion designer and CTC instructor Miriam Schenk.
Student Creations
The fashion show will feature garments crafted by young designers during an intensive one-week fashion design course. The course focused on upcycling fabrics and clothing into innovative looks, including clothing and accessories like jewelry and purses. These designs will take center stage, showcasing the creativity and skill of the next generation of fashion designers.
Miriam Schenk’s Latest Designs
In addition to student creations, the show will highlight Miriam Schenk’s latest designs. Among the notable pieces is a white dress donated to CTC by Schenk. “This dress is special because it’s designed to complement the majority of women’s bodies while emphasizing their beauty and curves,” Schenk explained. “Life is about special moments, and feeling amazing in what you wear creates those magical moments.”
Schenk, with over two decades of experience, began her career at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles. She has participated in numerous fashion shows and competitions and runs her own business, Schenk Couture, specializing in custom gowns. Her inspiration for the featured dress came from Texas’ state flower, the bluebonnet. “I envisioned a beautiful woman blending into nature while wearing a white dress,” she said.
Educational Opportunities
Schenk’s commitment to fashion extends beyond designing. She is passionate about teaching and will be leading a comprehensive Fashion Design Course as part of CTC’s Continuing Education Program starting in September. This course will cover sewing, pattern-making, and draping techniques, offering students a thorough grounding in fashion design.
“The most rewarding part of fashion is teaching others and seeing their pride in completing a project,” Schenk added. “There is nothing more beautiful than their smiling faces and full hearts.”
Supporting the College for Kids Foundation
The open house and fashion show will also feature a raffle with accessories designed by students and back-to-school baskets. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the College for Kids Foundation, which provides scholarships to children who might otherwise miss out on enriching educational experiences.
The Central Texas College Foundation, established in 1992, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students through scholarships and other donations.
