Derry-born fashion designer Jonathan Anderson has officially been appointed as the new artistic director of Dior menswear. The announcement was made by Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, during a shareholders meeting in Paris, confirming that Anderson will debut his first Dior men’s collection at the upcoming June fashion show in Paris.
Anderson, known for his understated public persona and casual appearances at fashion events, is stepping into the role following the departure of British designer Kim Jones, who ended his seven-year tenure at Dior Men earlier this year. Anderson shared the news on Instagram, posting an image of a Dior label accompanied by a four-leaf clover—an apparent nod to his Irish roots.
This high-profile appointment follows Anderson’s decision to leave his role as creative director of Loewe in March, where he led the luxury brand for over a decade. During his time at Loewe, Anderson garnered international acclaim and solidified his status as a transformative force in fashion. One of his most celebrated recent achievements was designing Rihanna’s bold and memorable outfits for her 2023 Super Bowl halftime performance, which he described as a “wild, wonderful dream.”
Anderson’s journey in the fashion industry began after graduating from the London College of Fashion in 2005. He initially worked in Prada’s marketing department before launching his own label, JW Anderson, in 2008. His talents quickly drew attention, and in 2013, LVMH acquired a minority stake in his brand, further cementing his place in the upper echelon of global fashion.
The timing of Anderson’s move to Dior comes amid growing uncertainty in the luxury fashion industry. Market challenges such as a slowdown in China and rising global trade tensions are affecting sales and investor confidence. His appointment is part of a broader wave of changes across top fashion houses, with several brands, including Chanel, Gucci, Celine, Fendi, Dries Van Noten, Givenchy, and Tom Ford, undergoing leadership transitions or actively seeking new creative talent.
Anderson’s arrival at Dior also highlights the strategic importance of the brand’s menswear division within the LVMH portfolio. Dior’s clothing and leather goods have been central to the conglomerate’s revenue, making the artistic direction of its collections a matter of financial and symbolic significance. Arnault, one of the world’s richest individuals, has emphasized the brand’s significance by appointing his daughter, Delphine Arnault, to lead Dior Couture in February 2023.
As Anderson takes the helm at Dior Men, industry observers will be watching closely to see how his unique design perspective and deep fashion experience will shape the next chapter of one of the most storied names in luxury menswear.
