At the latest China Fashion Week, tradition met innovation in a spectacular cultural showcase titled Sichuan Intangible Cultural Heritage: Yanbian Lisu Ethnic Group Clothes. The event presented a powerful blend of heritage and high fashion, embodying the forward-thinking idea of “wearing on the body” — a philosophy that turns clothing into a living narrative.
Models gracefully walked the runway in gradient rainbow skirts, bringing to life the legend of the Lisu ethnic group, where clothes are said to be crafted from “77 mountain flowers.” Each garment celebrated this ancient myth, echoing the harmony between nature and human craftsmanship.
The show wasn’t limited to traditional wear alone. Haute couture and ready-to-wear collections were also featured, seamlessly integrating Lisu ethnic elements with contemporary fashion design. Every piece was more than just attire — it was a cultural conversation that bridged generations and geographies.
Gu Yan, the show’s organizer and director of the Yanbian Lisu Ethnic Group Research Association, emphasized the deep symbolism behind Lisu clothing. She explained, “Lisu ethnic clothing carries rich historical significance. Our clothes are made of flowers from 77 mountains, the belt represents the rainbow in the sky, the alternating white and red on the pleated skirt symbolize the 99 rivers and 12 mountain ranges, while the white patterns below symbolize the path our ancestors took.”
Gu further shared that her goal in presenting the show at China Fashion Week was to revitalize ethnic clothing for everyday wear. “We want to bring traditional culture back into daily life, to truly wear our heritage, and to share it with the world,” she said.
Through this vibrant and symbolic runway experience, the Lisu ethnic culture was not only celebrated but given new life, reminding audiences that the fusion of the old and the new can create something truly timeless.
