Ponda and Berghaus have emphasized that making regenerative materials a commercially viable option within the fashion industry requires collective efforts, widespread support, and strong financial commitments.
The two brands state that their collaboration is not merely about refining existing practices, but rather about transforming textile production by adopting an eco-centric approach. Together, they have developed a prototype women’s jacket that incorporates regenerative materials into high-performance outdoor clothing without sacrificing functionality.
The jacket design integrates Ponda’s BioPuff and BioPuff Wadding for insulation, offering a dynamic solution for maintaining warmth. The garment features detachable components that allow users to adjust insulation according to different activities and weather conditions. This interchangeable system provides the flexibility to choose between loose fill or wadding, altering both the jacket’s appearance and practicality.
Produced and processed within Europe, the BioPuff material in the jacket marks a significant advancement in creating outerwear that is both efficient and environmentally responsible. Key attributes of the jacket include thermal regulation, versatility, and a design tailored specifically for women.
Ponda’s development of innovative textiles from regenerative fibres connects ecosystem restoration with the creation of sustainable materials for the textile industry. BioPuff insulation moves away from traditional feather and synthetic fillers, using plant fibres that contribute to wetland restoration efforts.
Life cycle assessments on BioPuff have shown that its carbon footprint is just 3.4kg CO₂ eq per kilogram, 88% lower than goose down and 19% lower than polyester fibre. Additionally, the material uses minimal water, just 0.4m³ per kilogram, relying on natural wetland crops instead of irrigated water. The production process also ensures full traceability, from its wetland origin to its final textile form.
The prototype jacket was created at Fashion-Enter Ltd (FEL), a London-based social enterprise known for its ethical garment manufacturing. FEL has been a leader in technical garment manufacturing training in the UK since the establishment of the Fashion Technology Academy in 2015, with support from government agencies.
Following this initial partnership with Ponda, Berghaus plans to integrate BioPuff into a select range of its insulated apparel for the autumn/winter season of 2025. This will enable the company to align its supply chains with Ponda and expand the commercial application of the partnership.
The goal is to address logistical and financial barriers that may impede Berghaus from gradually replacing synthetic insulative materials with BioPuff. Both companies aim to increase the number of Berghaus products featuring BioPuff with each new season.
