Satoru Sasaki Redefines Minimalism with Bold Textures at Rakuten Fashion Week 2025

by Demos

Tokyo Rakuten Fashion Week 2025 has once again united fashion enthusiasts and creatives, celebrating cutting-edge design and innovation. Among this year’s standout designers is Satoru Sasaki, who presented his Fall/Winter 2025 collection, staying true to his minimalist aesthetic while introducing bold colors and rich textures.

Sasaki’s journey in the fashion industry began in 1989 at Horiuchi Taro Co Ltd. After departing, he returned to his hometown of Kobe, crafting designs that resonated with European audiences. His talent was formally recognized in 2015, when he won the TOKYO Fashion Award Asia, propelling his career forward. Over the years, Sasaki worked with Jean-Paul Knott and Phoebe Philo at Celine, before establishing his own brand, SATORU SASAKI, in 2019.

His brand is rooted in unisex minimalism, with a core philosophy of designing “clothes that create women that men admire.” Sasaki masterfully balances feminine and masculine elements, while continuously redefining the boundary between simplicity and artistic expression.

For his Fall/Winter 2025 collection, Sasaki drew inspiration from Latvian-American abstract artist Mark Rothko, known for his bold color blocking and emotive geometric compositions. Just as Rothko’s works evoke profound emotion through simplicity, Sasaki aimed to translate that depth into wearable art.

The show opened with a striking red dress crafted from looped yarn, setting the tone for the collection. The tube dress featured two contrasting shades of red—a bright crimson bodice and a deep maroon skirt, creating a visually dynamic effect reminiscent of Rothko’s artwork. The looped yarn reappeared in various forms throughout the collection, shaping tops, skirts, and full dresses.

Adding to the collection’s rich textural play, Sasaki incorporated soft, fuzzy fabrics into scarves, jackets, and pants, offering warmth and contrast against the sleek, structured silhouettes. The tailoring was impeccable, with relaxed suit jackets paired effortlessly with flowing slacks and textured pants. Minimalist wool cardigans and coats maintained the focus on color and structure, ensuring versatility without sacrificing artistic vision.

One of the most eye-catching pieces was a top shaped like a painter’s palette, presented in vibrant hues and styled with tailored slacks. Another showstopper was a dramatic layered ensemble—a structured red-and-white top cascading into a flowing train, paired with tiny red velvet shorts. The collection also featured sculptural accessories, including a pillow-like piece crafted from looped yarn, held by a model as she confidently walked the runway.

Each design reinforced Sasaki’s artistic vision, where fluidity meets structure and simplicity embraces boldness. His Fall/Winter 2025 collection proves once again that minimalism can be expressive, textured, and deeply emotive—much like Rothko’s paintings. Through this showcase, Sasaki invites us to discover emotion in simplicity and rethink the future of minimalist fashion.
