A woman has reconnected with the past by re-creating her mother’s early 2000s outfits, leading her to develop a newfound appreciation for fashion.
Katya, 28, from Finland, received a collection of clothes from her 51-year-old mother, Oksana, a member of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980). Oksana had outgrown these garments but still cherished them, as they held fond memories for her. Wanting to pass them down, Oksana offered them to Katya, who belongs to Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012).
At first, Katya kept the clothes in her closet, unsure of how to style them. She admitted that she “wasn’t confident enough” to wear them at the time.
The 2000s were known for bold, vibrant fashion, and Katya described her mom’s outfits as “unapologetic, fashionable, and extra.”
Rather than letting the clothes remain untouched, Katya decided to embrace the nostalgic 2000s style by re-creating her mom’s “iconic outfits.” She began wearing the clothes regularly, integrating them into her everyday wardrobe.
Katya explained, “Wearing my mom’s clothes brings me a lot of nostalgia, and I feel her confidence. I also have great memories of seeing her wear these clothes when she was out with friends or at birthday parties, looking amazing.”
She continued, “I love wearing her outfits. The confidence boost is incredible. Plus, the quality is unmatched. The clothes are 20 years old, yet they still look brand new. They don’t make clothes like this anymore.”
However, Katya didn’t always appreciate her mom’s fashion choices. She recalled feeling “ashamed” of the outfits when she was younger and struggled to understand why Oksana dressed in such an “extra” way at the time.
“I was just an insecure teenager,” Katya said. “But my mom’s response has always been that if people don’t like how she looks, they shouldn’t be looking.”
Katya has documented her fashion journey on Instagram under the handle @mymomsaidkatya, showcasing how she has come to embrace these 25-year-old pieces.
Many social media users have enjoyed her posts, with one video earning over 1.8 million views and 7,300 likes.
In 2023, Katya finally found the confidence to wear her mom’s hand-me-downs. While her mom wishes she could still wear many of the items, she loves watching her daughter re-create her iconic style.
“My mom loves the videos,” Katya shared. “She was sad when the clothes were just sitting in my closet. She always says clothes are meant to be worn, and there’s no need to wait for special occasions—every day can be special.”
Katya’s re-creations have been met with overwhelming positivity on social media, with many viewers praising her fashion sense. She’s even inspired others to rummage through their parents’ closets for treasures of their own.
