Pine Island Redfish, a regenerative aquaculture company, has teamed up with eco-conscious apparel brand MANG to restore Florida’s native mangroves, crucial for protecting coastal communities from storm surges and flooding.
This collaboration launches MANG’s Propagule Collection Project, part of the brand’s Buy One. Plant One. initiative. Volunteers are encouraged to collect mangrove propagules, which are then nurtured by Pine Island Redfish before being transplanted along Florida’s west coast. These mangroves play a key role in reducing erosion through their specialized root systems.
The restoration project will help preserve Florida’s diverse ecosystems, benefiting both commercial fisheries and tourism. Mangroves, which serve as nurseries for marine life such as fish, crustaceans, and shellfish, face threats from urbanization and rising sea levels. Additionally, stronger storms linked to climate change exacerbate the risks.
Beyond providing essential coastal protection, mangroves store carbon at a rate 10 times higher than mature tropical forests, a crucial contribution to balancing the global climate.
