Promotional materials for Elie Saab’s fashion show in Riyadh promised a historic event—and they delivered. The show, marking the Lebanese designer’s 45-year career, was a stunning display of entertainment and creativity on a global scale.

The event, held at The Venue in Saudi Arabia’s capital, featured performances from superstars like Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Nancy Ajram, and Amr Diab, with more big names gracing the stage. International celebrities, including Monica Bellucci and Halle Berry, also made appearances. Berry, in particular, stood out as she walked the runway wearing the gown she wore to accept her Best Actress Oscar in 2002.

Titled “1001 Seasons of Elie Saab,” the event was a celebration of both regional and international talent. It underscored the role of Riyadh and Elie Saab in the global fashion and entertainment industries. The evening was a major success, drawing widespread attention for its scale and significance.

Elie Saab Reflects on His Career and Challenges

“I’m known for loving challenges,” Saab shared with The National after the show. “You can be sure there’s more to come.” However, the event’s success was bittersweet for the designer, considering the ongoing struggles in his home country of Lebanon. “My whole life has been like this,” he said, recalling his first runway show in 1982, which took place amid Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.

“I would have liked to postpone the event,” Saab added. “I would have loved for this to happen when Lebanon was in a better situation. But with everything we had committed to, it was difficult to change plans. I hope this event gives hope to every young person dreaming of a better future.”

A Musical Extravaganza

The fashion show was part of Riyadh Season, a series of events designed to bring the world’s best entertainment to Saudi Arabia. For this special occasion, Saab created an exclusive collection inspired by the tales of “One Thousand and One Nights.” The collection, comprising a vast number of pieces, was beyond what a typical fashion show could accommodate. The event felt more like a grand musical, blending fashion with theater and performance art.

The show was streamed live on MBC and many regional channels, making it accessible both in Saudi Arabia and internationally. Designed as a live performance, it combined fashion with spectacular entertainment, making the “1001 Seasons of Elie Saab” a unique experience that captivated audiences worldwide.

A Creative Collaboration

Carine Roitfeld, the former editor of French Vogue and founder of CR Fashion Book, styled the event, infusing it with bold energy and bridging the worlds of fashion and entertainment. Spanish choreographer and filmmaker Blanca Li curated the event’s dynamic lineup of performers and celebrities, overseeing a range of performances, from live music to theatrical dance.

Other high-profile attendees included Youssra, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kelly Rutherford, Jourdan Dunn, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova, Poppy Delevingne, and many more.

Elie Saab: A Fashion Icon

Over the past four decades, Elie Saab has built an empire that spans ready-to-wear collections, haute couture, bridal wear, children’s clothing, accessories, perfumes, and even luxury real estate, in collaboration with Emaar. From starting out with just 15 seamstresses in Lebanon, Saab has become a household name, known for his intricate designs and timeless elegance.

“Backstage today someone told me, ‘I can’t believe what you’re doing.’ I find my motivation in the appreciation and love from people,” Saab explained. “I’ve built strong foundations, and I know the right path. Success becomes easier when you know where you’re headed and work hard.”

Reflecting on his journey, Saab added, “If I could talk to my 15-year-old self, I’d tell him that what you saw tonight is the natural result of someone who worked as hard as I did.”

Saab first gained international recognition in 2002 when he dressed Halle Berry for her Oscar win in Monster’s Ball, making history as the first Lebanese designer to dress an Oscar winner. It was a defining moment in his career, and one that earned him a lasting place in fashion history.

It was no surprise to see Halle Berry among the stars celebrating Saab’s achievements in Riyadh, as both the designer and the city marked another milestone in the world of fashion and entertainment.
