Two brothers making waves in the fashion and entertainment world are set to debut a groundbreaking project that blends art and fashion. Nana Amfo, 23, and King Amfo, 25, both University of Kansas students, are the founders of Alpha Gang Media. Their upcoming fashion show in September will showcase urban streetwear and high-end couture against the backdrop of the Spencer Museum of Art’s exhibits.
King Amfo describes the event as a local equivalent to the Met Gala. “We’re doing it at the Spencer Museum, so it’s kind of like the Met Gala,” he said. “We’re trying to create that niche here in Lawrence.”
Nana Amfo emphasizes the event’s significance for fashion enthusiasts: “This is the one show you shouldn’t miss if you love fashion.”
The Amfo brothers began their journey with Alpha Records in their hometown of Accra, Ghana, initially focusing on music. Their parents, both architects, instilled in them the value of building generational wealth. Their mother’s mantra, “never go to bed without counting at least one Cedi,” motivated them to pursue entrepreneurship globally.
King Amfo moved to the U.S. in 2019 to study architecture at KU, and Nana followed in 2021, majoring in visual communications. While pursuing their degrees, they continue to support emerging artists, host podcasts, design clothing, and organize events.
Their clothing line, Alpha Couture, offers “affordable luxury” with a mix of streetwear style and high-quality materials sourced from Ghana. The brand’s slogan, “Not for the masses,” promotes individuality through fashion. “People should feel a part of what they’re wearing,” King said.
The fashion show will feature 25 models showcasing 25 unique outfits. The brothers, who grew up in a uniformed school system, emphasize the importance of subtle details in style. Their experience has led to the creation of seasonal clothing lines, reflecting their team’s collaborative talent.
Lawrence’s fashion scene, though less prominent, is active. The Amfo brothers have made connections through local shows and expanded their influence to Kansas City and beyond, including an “Alpha Gang UK” partnership.
The show will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, at the Spencer Museum of Art, located at 1301 Mississippi St., KU campus. Networking will start at 4:30 p.m., with a mocktail bar available. Tickets are free, but only 10 to 15 will be available to the public. The event’s total capacity is 50, with remaining seats reserved for students, staff, faculty, and other guests.
