Fashion for Good is launching a new initiative focused on advancing the next generation of footwear innovations with support from partners such as Adidas, On Running, PVH Corp, Reformation, Target, Zalando, and Inditex, the parent company of ZARA.

The initiative aims to promote circularity in footwear across four key areas of the supply chain. These include:

Materials: Identifying and validating sustainable alternatives for footwear materials like TPU, PU, EVA, leather, and rubber.

Design: Defining circular design principles for footwear and developing guidelines to establish a circular infrastructure.

End of Use: Creating a comprehensive dataset on post-consumer footwear waste, including volumes, construction, and composition. It also involves exploring solutions for repair, end-of-use processes, disassembly, and recycling.

Traceability: Establishing a footwear traceability data protocol to ensure transparency and substantiate sustainability claims.

Katrin Ley, Managing Director of Fashion for Good, emphasized the urgency of accelerating innovation in footwear sustainability. She highlighted the organization’s track record of challenging norms and expressed a commitment to leveraging their expertise to revolutionize the footwear industry. By intensifying their efforts, they aim to drive circularity and validate sustainable solutions in this rapidly evolving sector.
