Tokyo Fashion Week once again delivered a compelling stage for designers across Asia to showcase innovation and artistry, and among the standout names this season was YOUJIYOUNG, a haute couture women’s label from South Korea. The 2025 Autumn/Winter collection marked designer You Ji Young’s long-awaited debut at the event, drawing the attention of both industry professionals and fashion enthusiasts. Known for dramatic elegance and avant-garde creativity, the YOUJIYOUNG brand made a powerful impression on the Tokyo runway.
On March 20, JAPAN Forward attended the show, witnessing firsthand a performance that felt more like immersive theater than a traditional fashion show. The presentation married visual spectacle with technical excellence, introducing an atmosphere thick with emotion and deliberate artistry. From the moment it began, the event was steeped in drama — opera music roared through the venue, the lighting flickered with intensity, and the first model emerged not just walking but dancing slowly, her expression fierce and commanding. This opening moment set the tone for a collection that embraced boldness, mystery, and storytelling.
The label YOUJIYOUNG was launched in 2002 by You Ji Young, who has since built an impressive portfolio that spans not only fashion but also performance and cultural commentary. Her designs have previously appeared at global fashion showcases, including Paris Prêt-à-Porter, Shanghai Fashion Week, and Dubai Fashion Week. Outside of fashion weeks, she has brought her signature dramatic flair to the stage, designing costumes for theatrical productions such as the musical Cougar and the opera Hamlet. She has also worked on charitable fashion shows, notably those that highlight adaptive fashion for individuals with disabilities, and contributed to Miss Korea 2009. Her broad creative influence underscores a deeper belief: fashion should not only appeal to the eye but also tell stories, celebrate individuality, and uplift people from all walks of life.
The concept behind the Autumn/Winter 2025 collection, titled The Feast of Time, brought that philosophy to life. This theme explored the enduring nature of beauty through the ages, casting older models alongside younger ones to highlight the grace and wisdom found in aging — a striking and refreshing divergence from industry norms. The thoughtful casting lent emotional weight to the show, as models of varying ages walked with confidence and elegance, challenging fashion’s obsession with youth and redefining what it means to be timeless.
The garments themselves furthered the concept with their theatrical, textured compositions. Dramatic fur coats, intricately structured blazers, flowing gowns with geometric cutouts, and exaggerated tassels created a sense of movement and contrast. YOUJIYOUNG’s designs played expertly with opposites — loose, soft fabrics draped against rigid, architectural forms. The dominant color palette of muted grays and blacks lent the collection a somber, almost spiritual ambiance, adding to its contemplative undertone.
Among the most memorable pieces was a refined two-piece set featuring a tailored blazer with an extended panel doubling as a shawl or scarf, paired with capri pants adorned with tassels. A chic headscarf completed the look, striking a balance between effortlessness and intentional styling. Another notable design offered a creative twist on the pantsuit: a classic blazer structure transitioned into three sculpted, flower-petal-like layers at the waist, matched with voluminous, artfully draped trousers. This ensemble epitomized the collection’s fusion of structure and softness.
A particularly striking outfit presented a black leotard paired with fishnet tights and a long, luxurious fur coat. The unexpected addition of a beige shawl draped nonchalantly around the neck added an elegant contrast, merging edginess with sophistication. Signature elements such as bows and ribbons recurred throughout the show, including a standout corset adorned with delicate ties, paired with wide, flowing pants and a dramatic jacket. While much of the collection leaned into expressive and maximalist design, there were also moments of minimalism that left a quiet yet strong impression. One such piece was a knee-length gray baby doll dress with subtle pleats, exuding restrained charm. Another was a deconstructed A-line dress featuring a slanted, boxy neckline and a front-pinned bodice, revealing a subtle opening. The skirt’s layered, asymmetric structure demonstrated You Ji Young’s meticulous attention to form and detail.
YOUJIYOUNG’s debut at Tokyo Fashion Week was more than a presentation of garments — it was a full-fledged emotional journey. With a collection rooted in conceptual depth and delivered through evocative visuals, You Ji Young did not merely showcase fashion. She crafted a narrative. Through age-inclusive casting, bold silhouettes, and refined theatricality, she invited the audience into a world where time is a subject of celebration, not denial. The designer reminded all present that clothing can be more than wearable art — it can be a vessel for memory, experience, and meaning.
